5D2 RAW filehandling [14 Jul 2009|11:46pm]

olegvolk
Thus far, I have not been able to get Photoshop CS4 to install on my PC. It errors out and Adobe tech support is worthless and unreachable.

I tried using Lightroom but I absolutely hate the interface. I also tried Canon's included utility (Digital Photo Professional) but it is awkward and produces odd colors from RAW.

All I want is an import module for CS3 similar to Camera Raw. Any recommendations?

My new favorite element. [14 Jul 2009|08:42pm]

For years I have been idly looking for a classic glass flask every time [info]stachybotrys takes me to an antique shop. Old flasks were glass with a tin or leather or tin & leather covering. Kinda' fragile—which might explain my lack of success—but definitely messes with the taste of your fine liquor less than—ew—aluminum.

Then I got a rebate coupon when I bought my SIG 556 at Sportsman's Warehouse, good for anything in the store. Among the camping gear they have in stock are a whole bunch of titanium campware—cook pots, sporks, and mugs. Which they claim didn't have a taste. So after grabbing some enameled cast iron for [info]stachybotrys, I spent $42 on a mug. Plus tax. And yes, I am fully aware that this is the gear geek version of SWPL status signaling. Look at me, everyone! I drive a Prius, guzzle my coffee from an obnoxiously expensive drinking vessel made from amazingly light unobtainium scavenged from decommissioned submarines!

Thing is... it almost is $42 worth of cool. It doesn't have a taste. It is amazingly light. Since I shelled out for the double-wall version, it doesn't make my beverage get cold any faster than a porcelain mug. The folding handle is even comfortable. And of course it looks swanky. Actually, I would say it's about $24 worth of cool in and of itself, and the other $18 worth of value I will just have to derive from bragging about it. Hence this post.

I am so getting a titanium flask next.

My main complaints about Steyr AUG, illustrated [14 Jul 2009|09:13pm]

olegvolk

1. Ejection port much too close to the shooter's face.
2. Hot gas regulator is too close to the support hand, especially when the forward grip is folded.
3. Heavy, spongy trigger.

I like the balance and the short length, and the backup sights on the scope aren't bad.

Damn! What's with these women going nuts and killing their kids? Here's one I hadn't heard about - a woman from DC named Banita Jacks killed all four of her kids, aged 5-17, because they were being possessed by demons. That's right - demons. See, this is why I sometimes worry about people reading Chick tracts a little too seriously, or taking this asshole seriously.

Perhaps Andrea Yates or Dena Schlosser ought to be her new cell-mate - they seem to have a lot in common. [And, I kid not, Schlosser and Yates were actually cell-mates for a while.] And of course, let's remember that it's atheism or Darwinism that's to blame for immorality.

Dilemma: trying to decide whether to put my resume out.

I'm tired of my job and qualified to make more money.

On the other hand, my job seems safe and I like the people I work with and for, which is worth a great deal. And most things I could do for more money are contracts or at least start out that way. When old people talk about how they survived the Depression they never mention contracting. I've never heard of a Depression-era consultant. I think those people were eaten.

On the third hand I think I am getting dangerously close to the point that I will cease learning anything new where I am.

On the fourth hand I really hate the interview process. I'm pretty good at it in all modesty - there's only ever been one job I was qualified for and wanted that I wasn't offered - but I hate it.

On the fifth hand, [info]ikilled007 tells me that we Americans will soon be eating, lighting our lamps with, and probably bathing in our government-issued soylent green ration anyway, so what's the point?

Hmmmm.

AK Kits? [14 Jul 2009|03:46pm]

[jbarros]
Hi everybody.

I've been looking at AK47 kits, and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations, or has had any good or bad experiences with any suppliers? This will be the first weapon I've "put together" myself, and also my first AK. Any advice appreciated. :)

Thanks.

Willie Brown on Sarah Palin! [14 Jul 2009|02:46pm]

[ i honestly don't have an opinion on the subject, but i do like arguments against conventional wisdom.  think what you will of willie brown, but there should be no doubt that he knows of political instincts. ]

Willie's World
Sarah Palin, political genius

The pundits are wrong. Conventional wisdom is wrong. Sarah Palin's decision to step down as Alaska governor was a brilliant move.

Palin has some of the best political instincts I have ever seen. She became a pop-culture superstar overnight when John McCain made her his veep pick, and she's still second only to President Obama among politicians the public is interested in. Even in liberal San Francisco, she'd be front-page news if she ever came to town.

Weird Phenomenom [14 Jul 2009|10:34am]

boffo
While I was waiting for the bus this morning, I had this bizarre moment.

I was standing in the sun, and it was hot. I thought to myself, "If I move so that my shadow is in the shadow of that tree, I'll be in the shade." But something didn't seem right about that.

That's when I realized my shadow was pointing in the wrong direction.

I took a quick glance at the sun to confirm that it was indeed in the East, as it has been every morning for the last four billion years. But my shadow was also pointing East.

I was very confused for a second, until I noticed the bus shelter behind me, and realized that the sunlight was reflecting off it strongly enough for me to cast a shadow. I looked at the ground to the West and confirmed that I had another shadow which was pointing in the correct direction.

But still, I had a second or two of wondering if everything I thought I knew was wrong and I was somehow experiencing a glitch in the Matrix.

Marketing Fail [14 Jul 2009|05:33pm]

I have a really good business idea with the infrastructure to support it, and a web presence that is 75% to completion. I even have a cash flow coming in from this business. However, I have no goddamned idea how to market it. It’s a delicate industry, and it’s mainly targeted towards non-US people.

SEO and/or marketing tips go in the comments. Thank you in advance.

Weeds' message [14 Jul 2009|09:25am]

madbard
Just started season three of Weeds. An interesting question that's come to me recent is: in what light does the show actually portray drugs and their users?

Weeds pulls no punches in chastising knee-jerk anti-drug attitudes, both in intent and effectiveness. In Season Two, the character of Celia seems like a clear standin for Nancy Regan. The show also highlights the hypocricy of a society that outlaws pot but turns a blind eye to widespread alcohol abuse.

But it's not clear to me that the show is any more forgiving of even pot users. Most of the drug-users in the show (as of the end of Season Two) are traditional brian-dead stoners, bored amoral suburbanites, or shockingly hard-edge criminals. The central character of Nancy, though resourceful and enjoyable to watch as she tries to extricate herself from her problems, nonetheless started her own mess because she refused to give up a cushy lifestyle she no longer could support. In her own words, "worst ... mother... ever".

At the end of the day, the show might be criticizing not drugs per se, but the kind of lack of character that drives people to their abuse. Of course, I still have three seasons to go, so we'll have to see.

(Comments welcome, but no post-season-two spoilers please.)
